Super Mario Bros. 3, known in Japan as スーパーマリオブラザーズ3 [Supa Mario Burazazu 3] Super Mario Bros. 3, is a platform action game where you again play as Mario and Luigi the plumber brothers in their quest through Mushroom Kingdom to rescue Princess Toadstool from King Koopa. The game functions similarly to the first game in the series, but uses a stage play as a setting. Mario and Luigi wear costumes and the backgrounds looks like stage sets. There are also a whole host of new monsters, hazards, power-ups, and bosses. The game also features and an over world map, and lets players compete in minigames similar to Mario Bros. (NES).
This game is the sequel to Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES) in the USA or Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (FDS) in Japan. It's sequel is Super Mario World (SNES).
