Wai Wai Mahjong: Yukai na Janyuu-tachi is a mahjong simulation game developed and published by Video System, who had been releasing mahjong arcade games with adult themes around this time. Most likely to appeal to a wider audience, the company decided to produce a family-friendly version for home consoles. However, other than that, the game plays identical to their adult mahjong games; the player plays against a number of opponents, each with varying levels of difficulty, as well as an occupation. Some of these occupations include a racecar driver, a politician, and even a Nun! Each character has witty commentary that they'll make throughout each match. The game is over after a player loses all their points. The game has both a Normal Mode, as well as an Elimination Mode, the latter being the 'story' mode of the game: The player must best all opponents and eventually beat the final boss the Mahjong Hermit. After that, they have beaten the game. The player can play the game with or without the powerups (the manual recommends against using them), which are taken from the Video System arcade mahjong games.

The game was only released in Japan and was never translated to English, so a thorough knowledge of both Japanese and Mahjong is required to properly play the game.
